The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NIScPR) organised a Regional Workshop on “Science Breakthroughs: Paid News, Fake News and Ethics” during 20-22 February 2019 under the aegis of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA).
The tentacles of the all pervasive paid and fake news are spreading to science breakthroughs as well. This undesirable spread has adverse repercussions among all stakeholders including researchers, scientists, science communicators, students and the lay public. The workshop was organised to share, discuss, brainstorm and find solutions.
Fake and false science news making way into the mainstream and social media is a cause of serious concern. The spread of such undesirable information and the ways and means to address the growing menace were discussed and debated strongly at the 18th Indian Science Communication Congress (ISCC2018) organised by CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR) on 21-22 December 2018. The theme of the science communication congress was "200 Years of Science Journalism in India".
