Abstracting Journals

CSIR-NIScPR brings out two abstracting journals namely Indian Science Abstracts (ISA) and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Abstracts (MAPA). ISA is a fortnightly abstracting journal reporting current Indian scientific work published in India and abroad. MAPA is a bimonthly abstracting journal covering world literature on agronomy, botany, pharmacognosy, and biological activities of medicinal and aromatic plants by scanning around 600 journals.

Indian Science Abstracts (ISA) is a semi-monthly abstracting journal which has been reporting scientific work done in India since 1965. Original research articles short communications, review articles, and informative articles published in current Scientific and technical periodicals, as well as Indian standards and thesisare reported in ISA. It is a leading abstracting journal in India covering entire spectrum of Science and Technology including Intellectual Property Rights, Management and Library & Information Science.

The abstracts in ISA are broadly classified according to Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) scheme and arranged under UDC number(along with subject headings) in the following order of category of entry:journal article, standard and thesis. The documents are grouped under 26 broad classes. In each category the entries are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the first author and then by the journal, title and the year of publication . Entries are serially numbered. The keyword index terms are freetext terms rather than standard terms . A list of periodicals covered in the issue is provided, containing full name of journal along with the abbreviated title as used in the entries in parenthesis.

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Abstracts (MAPA)

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Abstracts (MAPA) is a bimonthly abstracting journal covering global current literature on all aspects of medicinal, aromatic and allied plants, including lower plants. It was started in 1979 as a printed publication. It involves scanning, selection and abstracting relevant research papers from primary journals and patents published from different countries in English language. Each record contains information about author(s), author affiliation, title of the paper, bibliographic details and an informative abstract. It also covers information on forthcoming conferences /seminars /meetings and latest published books on Medicinal Plants.

A landmark distinction of MAPA is its inclusion in the elite list of prior art scientific journals in the Non Patent Literature (NPL) as part of the requirement of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) minimum documentation of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Geneva. It is obligatory on the part of patent examiners to search for information from journals covered under NPL of PCT minimum documentation.
